Weekend matches produced no extra goals and no better home record than midweek ones. Within the same league, goals per match were just 0.02 lower at the weekend, and the home side’s win rate was unchanged. The two things that did differ were smaller and show up in the details: more yellow cards, and a few more corners.

Saturday and Sunday together made up 73.2% of the 33,323 matches. Goals per match stayed within 2.57 and 2.75 on every day, and the home win rate within 41.3% and 46.3%.
Raw figures like these are misleading, because the mix of leagues changes from day to day. Monday matches, for example, come from different competitions than Saturday’s. A fairer comparison keeps the league fixed.
The same league, weekend against midweek
For each of 15 leagues with at least 100 midweek matches, we compared Saturday and Sunday with Tuesday to Thursday and then averaged the 15 differences.

Goals and home wins showed no pattern: about half of the leagues went each way. Corners and cards were the exception, with the weekend higher in 13 of 15 leagues on each. The gap in cards was largest in the Greek Super League (+0.83), Belgium (+0.62) and the Eredivisie (+0.55), and the corner gap in Ligue 2 (+0.75) and Ligue 1 (+0.60).
The data can’t say why. Crowd size, kick-off time and the type of fixture are all candidates, and the results can’t separate them.
What it means for weekend predictions
Treat the weekend as a calendar fact and not a reason to move a goals or result forecast. For cards and corners, a small upward adjustment is justified, roughly a quarter of a card and a fifth of a corner per match on these averages.
Weekend fixtures are the busiest of the week, with almost three matches in four. People under 18 can’t bet, and the right amount for everyone else is one they’d be fine losing.
