Corners Today: How Many to Expect

A corner bet is about how many corners a match will have, or which team wins more of them. The usual form is over or under a line such as 9.5. Over 9.5 wins if there are ten corners or more in total, and under 9.5 wins if there are nine or fewer. There are also bets on a single team’s corners, on the first corner and on corner handicaps.

The table below shows today’s corner tips from an outside prediction provider, shown as published. Under it we look at how many corners a match really produces, which leagues have the most, and how much anything we know before kick-off tells us about the total.

How a corner bet is settled

Most bookmakers count the corners in the 90 minutes plus added time, using the match’s official data. Extra time normally doesn’t count. Details such as a corner awarded just before the whistle, or one that’s overturned on review, can be treated differently from one bookmaker to the next, so read the rules where you bet.

Bets on a single team’s corners, or on corner handicaps, work like goal handicaps: you add or subtract corners from one side before comparing the totals.

How many corners a match has

Across 33,323 league matches, the average was 9.78 corners and the middle value was 10. The lines are set close to that, which is why corners are so evenly balanced.

Each half corner on the line takes roughly 11 points off the chance of the over. That’s why 9.5 is a coin flip and why the over at 11.5 needs a reason. The totals bunch around 9 to 11, and about one match in 20 reaches 16 or more.

League by league

The league sets the baseline. The Scottish Premiership averaged 10.62 corners, the Premier League 10.33 and the Eredivisie 10.25. At the other end, the Greek Super League averaged 8.79 and Ligue 2 9.12.

That gap changes the bet. Over 9.5 landed in 61.3% of Scottish Premiership matches and 38.7% of Greek Super League ones. The same line is a very different proposition in the two leagues.

Home teams win the corner count more often than away teams. They took 54.9% of all corners.

Strong teams take more corners

The favourite’s price is the best guide to who takes the corners. A favourite priced at 75% or better took 73.4% of the corners, averaging 7.71 against the opponent’s 2.79. It won the corner count in 84.5% of matches, and the match itself in 83.7%.

For an even match, the share is near 50-50. The total number of corners barely moves with the strength of the favourite: 9.64 when the favourite was under 45%, 10.50 above 75%.

Corners and the scoreline

Corners are a poor guide to who wins. The team with more corners won 38.4% of matches, drew 26.3% and lost 35.3%, hardly better than chance. Teams that trail at half-time take more of them. The home share of corners was 58.1% when the home side was behind at the break, 55.3% when the match was level and 51.8% when it led.

Corners and goals don’t move together either. The link between a match’s corner count and its goals was -0.016, practically nothing.

How much do team averages tell you?

Not much. We took 28,076 matches where both teams had played at least six games and averaged each side’s corners. We then compared the pair’s average with the actual total.

When the pair averaged under 9.25, the match went over 9.5 in 41% to 44% of cases. When it averaged 10.75 to 11.5, it went over 60.4%. That’s a useful spread, though a modest one.

The correlation between the pair’s average and the real total was only 0.147.

When both teams averaged 11 corners or more, the match averaged 10.88. When both averaged 9 or fewer, it averaged 8.92.

Five rules for corner tips

  1. Start from the league. The Scottish Premiership and the Greek Super League are 1.8 corners apart.
  2. Mind the line. Each half corner changes the odds of the over by about 11 points.
  3. Use both teams. A pair average over 10.75 gave the over 9.5 in about three matches out of five.
  4. Expect more corners from trailing home sides. Teams chasing the game attack more.
  5. Don’t read the score from corners. More corners didn’t mean more goals or more wins.

Common mistakes

The first is picking a line because it looks round. 9.5 is a coin flip in most leagues.

The second is assuming a dominant team means more corners in total. The total moved only about a corner between weak and very strong favourites.

The third is ignoring settlement rules, which vary more for corners than for most bets.
